Say Cheese-China's Cheese Industry
One of the main realizations I had in China was the lack of dairy products, mainly cheese. Everywhere I turned there was a noticeable lack of dairy whereas in America we are bursting with our dairy filled products. According to maketingtochina.com the cheese industry in China is actually on the rise, in fact its expected to triple in by 2022. China currently has a cheese consumption rate of 69,000 tons which is nothing compared to the United States' 3.71 million tons. Cheese recently became popular again in China because of how desperate the chinese are to be like Europeans, who consume cheese daily. Prior, cheese was only known to be "good for pregnant women" but now it has become much more popular.
Had I known about the lack of cheese in China, I would have packed a couple of Kraft Mac & Cheese boxes in my carry on before I lived there for five months. Briefly, China actually banned cheese from foreign countries due to the "presence of unwanted bacteria." Now however cheese is legal and taking the Chinese markets by storm. It is actually considered to be chic and unique for restaurants to serve cheese on their menu. Maybe if all else fails, I'll move to China and sell cheese for the rest of my life. Big thank you to millenials in China keeping cheese alive for all to enjoy!
